Xiaomi says Sky Nomad is a series, not a new brand, teases SUV

July 9, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This is car news, not a home energy story, but it touches home charging math if you follow EVs. Xiaomi has clarified that Sky Nomad, its rugged new SUV, is a new vehicle series under the Xiaomi EV brand rather than a separate spinoff brand as earlier rumors suggested. The SUV, expected to launch as the N90, is Xiaomi's first vehicle that isn't a pure electric car. It uses a large battery pack of more than 70 kWh, giving 400 to 500 km (about 249 to 311 miles) of electric-only range, plus a small gas engine that acts only as a generator to extend total range past 1,500 km. That battery is bigger than the one in the base Tesla Model Y sold in China. Pricing is expected to start around 200,000 yuan, roughly $29,400.

None of this changes any home energy programs or rebates. But if you're weighing an EV purchase alongside home upgrades, it's a reminder that the cheapest miles usually come from electricity generated at your own house. With grid electricity rates rising, home solar can lock in lower charging costs over time, and some installers offer lease or power-purchase options with no upfront cost. If you're shopping for panels, comparing quotes from multiple vetted installers is the easiest way to find a fair price.
