Republicans & Democrats in Congress Unite in Effort to Ban Chinese Electric Vehicles

July 9, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 32

The Senate Commerce Committee is set to vote on July 15 on a bipartisan bill that would block Chinese automakers from selling electric cars in the United States. The bill, proposed by Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio and Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, would write into law a rule the Biden administration already put in place effectively banning Chinese passenger vehicles from the US market. Similar legislation has been introduced in the House. The stated reason is national security: officials argue that cars with advanced connectivity and software built in China could collect sensitive data on American drivers. This would come on top of 100% tariffs already placed on Chinese EVs.

Auto trade groups representing nearly all major carmakers, including the Detroit automakers, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Toyota, have pushed for this restriction, citing concerns about China's dominance in vehicle manufacturing.

For homeowners, this is mostly background news rather than something requiring immediate action. Chinese-brand EVs are not being sold in the US market currently, so this legislation would not change what is available in dealerships right now. If you are weighing an EV purchase alongside other home energy upgrades, like a heat pump or home charger, your practical options will continue to be vehicles from US, European, Japanese, and Korean automakers already sold here. Whether this bill passes or not, it does not change the rebates or incentives available for home energy equipment.
