NC Groups Push Back on AI Leadership Council’s Strategic Plan

August 13, 2026 · Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) · Score: 32

A group of North Carolina environmental organizations is pushing back on the state's AI Leadership Council's Strategic Roadmap, arguing it doesn't do enough to protect communities from the costs of data center growth. The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) has joined this coalition, called the North Carolina Data Center Network, in a letter raising concerns about job loss, rising energy costs, and pollution tied to expanding AI infrastructure in the state.

The core worry is that data centers use huge amounts of energy and water, and utilities across the Southeast have already proposed new fossil-fuel power plants or delayed retiring coal plants to meet this demand. That can mean higher electric bills and more pollution for regular customers, even though most residents see little direct benefit from the AI boom. The letter also flags that data center permits are often approved quickly with little public input, so nearby communities may not learn about a project's water use, noise, or emissions until after it's already been approved. The coalition wants the state to require new data centers to use on-site clean energy and disclose their energy and water needs upfront, and SACE has called for a statewide pause on new data center construction until stronger protections are in place.

For homeowners, this isn't a program or rebate you can apply for. It's a policy fight over whether North Carolina's rules for data center growth will factor in impacts on local utility rates, air and water quality, and grid reliability before more of these facilities get built.
