GE Vernova gas turbine backlog climbs to 116 GW

July 23, 2026 · Utility Dive · Score: 21

Power equipment maker GE Vernova reported strong demand for large gas turbines and electrical gear like transformers, the kind of heavy machinery utilities use to build and run power plants and grids. The company's order backlog for gas turbines climbed to 116 gigawatts, up from 100 gigawatts a few months earlier, with utilities and data center operators both placing orders years in advance. Its electrical equipment business also grew fast, with a backlog topping $40 billion, driven partly by demand tied to data centers and rising electricity use nationwide.

For homeowners, this is mostly a signal about where the broader grid is headed rather than something with a direct, immediate effect on your house. Heavy orders for gas turbines and grid equipment point to utilities expecting significant growth in electricity demand in the coming years, partly from data centers. That kind of demand growth can influence how utilities plan investments, which over time can affect electricity rates and how much capacity is available on the grid.

The company's wind turbine business, by contrast, is struggling, with orders down sharply due to tariff uncertainty and weak U.S. demand for onshore wind. Analysts see some hope for a rebound tied to aging wind farms being rebuilt with newer equipment. None of this changes anything about home energy upgrades or rebates directly, but it offers a broader picture of how the power industry is positioning itself for the years ahead.
