Zoox To Start Charging Passengers Next Week

August 7, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 3

This one is outside home energy upgrades, so here's the short version: it's news about robotaxis, not rebates or retrofits.

Zoox, the self-driving car company owned by Amazon, has federal approval to start charging passengers for rides. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cleared the company to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis over the next two years and to collect fares. Zoox says it will begin charging riders in Las Vegas next week. The vehicles have no steering wheel or pedals for a human driver.

Zoox has already given more than 1 million free rides across over 3 million miles in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin, and Miami. It has also been gaining ground against Waymo, the current market leader in robotaxis. Data cited in the reporting shows Zoox's share of monthly active users grew from 15 percent in January 2026 to 25 percent by June 2026, while Waymo's share slipped from 79 percent to 69 percent over the same months.

None of this touches home energy upgrades, rebates, or weatherization programs. It is simply a sign that robotaxi service is expanding and starting to turn into a paid business in at least one city.
