Xpanner introduces excavator-mounted automation tool to ease utility-scale installation bottlenecks

July 16, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 16

A company called Xpanner has released a new tool aimed at speeding up construction of large, utility-scale solar farms, the kind that power the grid rather than sit on a house roof. The tool, called the X1 Panel Lift, attaches to a standard excavator and automates the lifting and placement of solar panels, a job normally done by hand by large crews. The idea is to cut down on the physical strain and slow pace that comes with manually carrying and positioning thousands of heavy panels.

The system runs on Xpanner's own control software, called Mango, which uses sensors including LIDAR, cameras, and GPS to guide the excavator through each pickup and placement automatically. Because it's built on top of a regular excavator, one machine can do work that used to require several pieces of equipment and multiple specialized workers. Xpanner is offering it as a subscription that bundles the hardware, software, and on-site support, rather than a big upfront purchase.

This news is about utility-scale solar construction, not home solar installation, so it doesn't change anything about rooftop panels or home energy upgrades directly. But it's a sign of how the solar industry is trying to solve labor shortages and speed up large project timelines, which can affect how quickly big solar farms come online and, over time, how much solar power is available on the grid.
