Xiaomi makes Sky Nomad official: new EREV brand to take on Li Auto
This is car news, not directly about home energy upgrades, but here is what happened. Xiaomi, the Chinese tech company that also makes electric vehicles, has confirmed a new vehicle line called "Sky Nomad." Unlike Xiaomi's earlier cars, this one is not a pure battery electric vehicle. It is an EREV, short for extended-range electric vehicle, meaning it runs on electricity from a battery but also carries a small gas engine that acts only as a generator to recharge the battery on long trips, rather than powering the wheels directly. The first model, a large SUV, is expected to offer 400 to 500 km of range on battery power alone, and more than 1,500 km when combined with the gas generator.
The vehicle is aimed at China's market for family-sized SUVs, competing with established EREV brands there. Pricing is expected to start around 200,000 yuan, roughly $29,400, undercutting rival models. A launch is expected in the second half of 2026.
For a homeowner, the relevant idea is simply the growing use of home electricity to power daily driving, with a backup engine reserved for occasional long trips. This reflects a broader shift toward vehicles that plug in at home and rely on gasoline only rarely. It does not change any rebate, program, or upgrade decision for your house, but it is part of the larger trend of electrifying transportation alongside home energy use.
