World’s oldest cheddar-maker slashes energy bills with novel heat pumps
A UK dairy farm is showing how heat pumps can pay for themselves fast. Barber's Farmhouse Cheesemakers, in business since 1833, started installing "milk-source" heat pumps in 2024 from startup Arkaya Energy. Instead of pulling heat from air, ground, or water like typical heat pumps, these machines draw it from fresh milk, which comes out of the cow warm. The system chills the milk down to about 35°F while using the heat it removes to warm water to nearly 198°F for washing equipment. That water previously needed a boost from an electric or fossil-fuel-fired boiler, since standard heat-recovery setups can't reach those temperatures on their own.
The results: Barber's cut electricity use in half, saving about $94,000 a year and cutting carbon pollution by nearly 66 tons annually. The equipment paid for itself in under two years, which is unusually fast for this kind of investment. The farm has installed the heat pumps at three of its seven milking parlors and plans to convert the rest by 2028.
This is a niche, farm-specific technology, not something for a typical house. But it's a real-world example of how heat pumps — which move heat rather than burning fuel to create it — can slash energy bills when they're matched well to a specific job, in this case handling both cooling and hot-water needs at once. The company behind it is currently focused on the UK market but has said the size of the U.S. dairy industry makes it a logical place to expand eventually.
