What Are Nature-Based Solutions and Why Are They Needed Now?

August 11, 2026 · Union of Concerned Scientists · Score: 28

This is a broader look at "nature-based solutions" — approaches to flooding, drought, and heat that work with natural systems instead of concrete and pipes. The Los Angeles River is the example: most of it was paved into a concrete channel decades ago to move stormwater fast, but a few stretches couldn't be lined and grew back naturally, bringing wildlife, cleaner water, and neighborhood green space along with flood control. A restoration project is now extending that approach along more of the river.

The bigger point is about cost and climate. Extreme swings between drought and heavy rain are becoming more common, and traditional gray infrastructure — dams, levees, storm drains — is expensive and can't easily adapt. Money spent preventing floods, fires, and drought damage ahead of time costs far less than paying for disaster relief afterward, and those costs fall hardest on communities with the least infrastructure.

In California's farm regions, this connects to efforts to convert some irrigated farmland to other uses to meet groundwater rules, using techniques like floodplain restoration and aquifer recharge that can also reduce dust, flooding, and extreme heat nearby. California's Proposition 4 climate bond includes funding for this kind of work.

There's no direct step for homeowners here — this is about state and regional infrastructure and agricultural land policy, not home upgrades. But it's useful background if you live near a waterway, in a flood-prone area, or in a farming region, since these projects can affect local flood risk, green space, and water costs over time.
