Volvo wants to launch two new EVs in the US priced around $50,000, and they are not SUVs

July 15, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This is car news rather than home energy news, but here's what's happening: Volvo is considering bringing two new electric vehicles to the US, a sedan and a wagon, with prices starting in the low $50,000s. They could arrive at dealerships in 2028. Both would be built on Volvo's new electric-only platform, called SPA3, which already appears in the EX60 SUV. That platform uses 800-volt electrical architecture, a technology that generally allows for faster charging and better range, along with a construction method that frees up more interior space.

This matters because Volvo currently sells only SUVs in the US after dropping its last sedan and, soon, its last wagon. If these plans go forward, buyers would get non-SUV electric options again, something increasingly rare in the American market. Volvo isn't expecting huge volume, forecasting around 10,000 annual US sales for the pair, and the cars would be built in Europe rather than domestically.

For homeowners thinking about electric vehicles, the relevant takeaway is simply that more EV body styles may become available at a sub-$55,000 starting price in a few years, alongside faster-charging technology. There's no announced connection here to home charging equipment, incentives, or utility programs, so this is more of a heads-up on future vehicle options than something requiring any decision now.
