Volkswagen’s next electric SUV is almost here, and it’s not just a rebadged ID.4 [Images]

This news is about a car, not a home upgrade, but it may interest homeowners weighing an electric vehicle alongside other energy plans. Volkswagen is retiring its ID.4 electric SUV and replacing it with a redesigned model called the ID. Tiguan, expected to debut by the end of 2026. Spy photos show a more traditional SUV shape with a squared-off front end, new headlights, a redesigned hood, and doors with pop-out handles, all styled closer to VW's gas-powered Tiguan.

The new SUV will ride on Volkswagen's updated MEB+ platform, already used in the ID. Polo and ID.3 Neo, and is expected to bring a redesigned interior with a new infotainment system and a return of physical buttons for climate controls, based on driver feedback. Volkswagen has not released battery or range figures for the new model, but says recent updates to batteries and electric drive systems should improve on the current ID.4, which offers up to 291 miles of range in rear-wheel-drive form and 263 miles with all-wheel drive.

For context, VW ended ID.4 production at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant earlier this year, shifting that factory to gas-powered SUVs, though existing ID.4 stock is expected to last into 2027. The new ID. Tiguan will be built at VW's plant in Emden, Germany. If you're considering an EV purchase to pair with home charging or solar plans, this is one more model to watch for when it arrives.
