Translucent Solar Starts Producing Solar Panels in South Carolina

August 20, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 42

A new solar panel factory has started making panels in Summerville, South Carolina. The plant belongs to Translucent Solar and is part of a broader push, backed by federal incentives and tariffs on imported panels, to build more solar equipment inside the US. By the end of 2026, the factory is expected to reach its full production capacity of 1.2 gigawatts a year.

The panels coming out of this plant are meant for a mix of uses: large utility-scale solar farms, commercial installations, and residential systems. So some of what rolls off this line could eventually end up on homes. The company describes this South Carolina plant as a $15.6 million first-phase investment, and its managing director says it plans to expand further into US manufacturing, including making the solar cells and wafers that go into panels, not just assembling them.

For homeowners, this doesn't change anything immediately. No new rebate, price break, or program is tied to this factory opening. It does add to the supply of American-made solar panels, which matters if incentives or rules in your state give any preference to domestic manufacturing when you install rooftop solar. If you're weighing a home solar project, it's still worth checking what panel-sourcing rules, if any, apply to rebates or tax credits where you live, since those details vary by state and program.
