Thornova Solar to make silicon cells in Oklahoma under Nextnova name

August 25, 2026 · Solar Power World · Score: 23

A new solar cell factory is coming to Yukon, Oklahoma, just outside Oklahoma City. The company behind it, Nextnova, is a new brand from Thornova Solar, which has been supplying solar panels to the U.S. since 2022. Thornova itself started as the U.S.-focused arm of China's Sunova Solar, and it also runs production in Kenya and has manufacturing access in Indonesia.

The Oklahoma plant will take over a 450,000-square-foot building once used by Xerox. It's set to start mass production of p-type silicon solar cells (a common, well-established solar cell technology) in early 2027, with capacity to make 2 gigawatts worth of cells a year, expandable later to 6 gigawatts. The project is expected to create 300 jobs.

For homeowners, this is mainly a sign of more solar manufacturing moving to U.S. soil, which can matter for panels that need to meet "made in America" requirements tied to certain tax credits or rebates. It's not yet clear where Nextnova's cells will end up being turned into finished solar panels or where those panels will be sold, so there's no direct word yet on whether this changes what's available to homeowners shopping for solar. Worth keeping an eye on if you're considering solar and care about where your equipment is made, but no immediate action or availability to note yet.
