This electric aircraft fire truck hits 50 mph in under 20 seconds

August 13, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 18

Dallas Love Field Airport has put an electric aircraft fire truck into testing, and it charges fast enough to stay ready for emergencies. The Rosenbauer PANTHER, built for aircraft rescue and firefighting, weighs 91,000 pounds but can go from 0 to 50 mph in under 25 seconds on electric power, or under 20 seconds in a boost setting. That beats the airport's diesel truck, which takes 28 seconds. It also sprays water or foam up to 250 feet, 40% farther than the diesel version's 190 feet, and runs about half as loud during calls.

The truck charges on a new 400 kW fast charger from XCharge North America, installed at the airport's newly opened Station 21. Rosenbauer designed the battery to handle a full emergency run: driving to the scene, using up its entire supply of firefighting agent, and returning to base. The company says the truck can cover more than 90% of daily operations and training on electric power alone.

This isn't a story about home energy upgrades, but it's a real-world sign that battery power and fast charging are being trusted for demanding, safety-critical vehicles, not just passenger cars. The truck is in a six-month test period at one of the busiest airports in the country, with Dallas Fire-Rescue's feedback expected to shape the design before it goes into regular service elsewhere.
