This 1.5 MW electric truck charger just cleared a key US hurdle

August 6, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 24

A Portuguese company, i-charging, just got US and Canadian safety certification for a heavy-duty electric truck charger called the i-light. The certification, from a lab called Intertek (known as ETL), confirms the charger meets electrical safety standards for fast chargers in both countries. It's a step toward the company selling and installing these chargers for truck fleets in North America, though no US or Canadian customers or installation dates have been announced yet.

This charger is built for delivery trucks and other large commercial vehicles, not passenger cars, so it won't show up in a home garage. It can plug into trucks using the charging standard already common on the road today, delivering up to 800 kilowatts, or use a newer standard designed for the biggest electric trucks, which pushes power up to 1.5 megawatts, enough to recharge a heavy truck's much larger battery during a driver's required rest break rather than over many hours.

For homeowners, this isn't a direct upgrade to anything in your house. It matters mainly if you live near planned freight depots, distribution centers, or highway rest stops, since fast chargers like this one are typically installed at those kinds of commercial sites to serve fleets, not neighborhoods. It's a sign that the infrastructure for electric trucking is advancing, but it doesn't affect home electrical panels, rebates, or residential charging equipment.
