The Single Largest Pollution Source In The USA Going To Be An Amazon AI Data Center
Amazon is reportedly building a massive gas-burning power plant in Pecos County, Texas, to run a huge AI data center. The plant would use 35 gas turbines with a total capacity of 7.65 gigawatts and is expected to release 33 million tons of carbon dioxide a year, which would make it the single largest source of pollution in the country.
The project stands out because Amazon was a cofounder of The Climate Pledge, a corporate commitment to cut carbon emissions. An Amazon spokesperson responded to questions about the plant by saying the world looks different now than when the company signed that pledge, pointing to surging demand for AI as the driving factor.
For homeowners, this isn't a program or rebate you can act on, but it's a sign of where a lot of new electricity demand and emissions growth in the country is coming from right now. As AI data centers multiply and need huge amounts of power, some of that demand is being met with new gas plants rather than cleaner sources. That can matter for the broader push toward a cleaner electric grid, which affects things like the emissions tied to the power that reaches your own home over time.
