Tesla’s Profit Per Vehicle Has Been Dropping Significantly
Tesla's profit on each vehicle it sells has been falling for years. The company made $9,500 in net profit per car in 2022, but that dropped to $3,570 in 2024 and just $2,140 in 2025, even as overall sales have shrunk. Tesla has also dropped its higher-priced Model S and Model X, and the Cybertruck has not sold well.
Sales did jump in the second quarter of 2026, but mostly because of a surge in demand in Europe. That surge was tied partly to the US-Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and partly to Tesla selling cheaper versions of the Model Y and Model 3 there. It is not clear how much profit Tesla makes on those lower-cost cars. Meanwhile, Tesla is ramping up production of the Cybercab, a self-driving robotaxi, while continuing to spend heavily on its self-driving software.
None of this changes anything about buying or owning a Tesla today, but it is a sign of a company at a turning point. Whether Tesla's finances improve or worsen from here may depend on how the Cybercab and its self-driving technology perform, and whether the low-cost European models can be sold profitably elsewhere.
