Tesla launches ‘Tesla Home’ with Opticaster AI to cut power bills
Tesla has rolled out "Tesla Home," a home energy platform meant to give owners one app to control a Powerwall battery, solar panels or Solar Roof, the Wall Connector EV charger, and Eaton's AbleEdge smart breakers. You pick a goal, like "Savings" to minimize your electric bill or "Self-Powered" to run on stored solar after dark, and the system handles the rest. It comes standard on every Powerwall with no new hardware needed for current owners.
The software making the decisions, called Opticaster, isn't actually new. It's the same AI engine Tesla has used for years to manage batteries at utility scale and in its virtual power plant programs, which paid Powerwall owners nearly $10 million in 2024. So the real change here is mostly in the app: version 4.58.6 consolidates scattered settings (backup reserve, off-grid modes, and so on) into one "Home Controls" menu, adds control over individual circuits through the smart breakers, and includes a "Home Status" feature that explains in plain language what the system is doing and why. Rate Plan Charging, which times EV charging to cheaper electricity hours, works if a Powerwall is paired with a Gen 3 or Universal Wall Connector.
For homeowners who already have a Powerwall, this shows up as an app update and reorganization rather than a new purchase. Whether it meaningfully lowers your bill depends on how well Opticaster performs for individual homes, something that's still unproven at that scale.
