Tesla launches Model Y L in US — 6 seats, 325 miles, $61,990

July 2, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 23

Tesla has launched the Model Y L in the US, a longer version of its popular Model Y SUV with room for six people across three rows. The stretched body adds about 6 inches to the wheelbase, making space for real second-row captain's chairs and a usable third row, unlike the cramped extra seating Tesla added to the standard Model Y earlier this year. Tesla says it can go 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds and travel 325 miles on a charge, with features like heated and ventilated seats, a second screen for rear passengers, and Tesla's supervised driver-assist system.

The catch is price. This first version, called the "Launch Series," starts at $61,990 — more than Tesla's own high-performance Model Y and pricier than two direct rivals, the Kia EV9 ($54,900) and Hyundai Ioniq 9 ($58,955), both of which also offer three rows and strong range. Tesla often starts a new model with an expensive, fully loaded trim before adding cheaper versions later, so a lower-priced Model Y L may follow.

For homeowners weighing an EV purchase, this mainly matters if you need genuine third-row seating and were considering Tesla, Kia, or Hyundai options. If you already own or plan to buy an EV, charging costs at home remain the bigger ongoing factor, and pairing an EV with home solar can help offset those costs regardless of which vehicle you choose.
