Tesla discontinues its Solar Roof tiles, not economically viable
Tesla has stopped making its Solar Roof, the shingle-style tiles that generate power while also serving as your roof. The company has told its certified installers that it will no longer supply the tiles, only standard solar panels going forward. Tesla's website confirms the change: the old Solar Roof page now redirects to its solar panels page, and Solar Roof has been dropped from the site's energy menu.
Internally, Tesla concluded the product wasn't financially viable. It never came close to the volume Elon Musk once promised, and installed prices ran far above early quotes, in some cases nearly doubling after homeowners had already signed contracts, which led to a class-action settlement in 2023. Industry data suggests only around 3,000 systems were installed in the US over roughly seven years.
If you were considering a Tesla Solar Roof, that option is gone. This doesn't affect the economics of ordinary rooftop solar panels, which remain unrelated to the tile product and can still make sense depending on your roof and electricity rates. Other companies still make solar shingle products similar in concept to what Tesla built, so that style of integrated roofing hasn't disappeared entirely, just Tesla's version of it. Anyone weighing a roof replacement alongside solar will now be choosing among panel-based systems or a competitor's shingle product rather than Tesla's tiles.
