Terra-Gen brings online final phase of 365-MW Lockhart Solar project

July 14, 2026 · Solar Power World · Score: 18

A big solar and battery project in San Bernardino County, California, is now fully up and running. Terra-Gen's Lockhart Solar and Storage facility finished its last phase, an 80-megawatt solar addition, bringing the whole site to 365 megawatts of solar generation plus 173.7 megawatts of battery storage. Combined, the four phases produce enough electricity to cover the annual needs of more than 350,000 homes and businesses. The power flows through a long-term agreement with a California utility buyer, and it connects to the grid through Southern California Edison's Kramer Junction Substation.

This is a large-scale utility project, not something tied to individual home installations, so it does not offer a rebate or program homeowners can sign up for. What it means for California homeowners is more supply of solar and stored power feeding into the grid, which can support grid reliability, especially during high-demand periods when battery storage helps smooth out supply.

The facility sits on about 4,000 acres and includes nearly 1 million solar panels and 248 battery storage units. Construction supported more than 220 jobs at its peak. For homeowners, the news is mostly a sign of how much utility-scale solar and storage capacity is being added in Southern California, which can factor into overall grid stability and the broader push toward cleaner electricity in the region.
