Supercritical CO₂ Is Useful. The System Claims Are The Problem.

This is a story about industry technology, not something that affects your home directly. It looks at "supercritical" carbon dioxide, a state where CO₂ under high heat and pressure acts partly like a gas and partly like a liquid. That property is already used in small, contained systems, like some heat pumps and refrigeration equipment, and in processes like decaffeinating coffee.

The bigger question is whether this same substance can work at a much larger scale, either as part of a system to capture carbon dioxide from power plants and factories and pipe it away for storage, or as a fluid used inside new kinds of power plants instead of steam. The analysis argues that scaling up carbon-capture pipelines to handle emissions from scattered industrial sites nationwide would require a vastly bigger network than the pipelines that already exist, along with enormous cost and new safety concerns, since a 2020 pipeline accident in Mississippi caused a dangerous gas cloud that sent people to the hospital. It also notes that using this CO₂ in power-plant equipment has been researched since 1948 without solving key engineering problems, while competing more directly with wind, solar and heat pumps.

None of this changes anything about home heating, cooling or rebates. It is a reminder that a useful material in a small device does not automatically translate into a workable large-scale energy system.
