Sunrun wants to pay you to turn your home into an AI data center
Sunrun, the home solar and battery company, has launched a pilot program that turns houses with its solar panels and battery storage into small AI data centers. The company installs compute nodes, essentially servers, in participating homes and sells that computing power to business customers. In return, homeowners get paid for hosting the equipment.
The idea is to help handle AI "inference" workloads, the stage where trained AI models actually respond to users. Unlike AI training, which needs huge centralized data centers full of specialized chips, inference can be spread across many smaller sites, and doing it closer to users can even improve performance. Sunrun says spreading this work across its network of more than 1.1 million customers could deliver computing capacity faster than building new data centers, which often face long delays for permits and utility connections. Because the equipment sits behind your home's electric meter and is paired with a battery, Sunrun says it could keep running during some power outages while easing strain on the electric grid.
Sunrun has already run a proof of concept and is now testing the equipment in more homes under different electricity rate setups. The pilot is expected to run for a few months before Sunrun decides whether to expand it. This is separate from the company's other deal with Renew Home and Tesla to pool home battery and energy capacity for utilities. For now, this only applies to homes that already have Sunrun solar and storage systems.
