Sunrun and Voltus team up to offer megawatts to hyperscalers
Sunrun, which installs home solar and battery systems, is teaming up with Voltus, a company that bundles small energy sources into larger blocks of power, to sell electricity capacity to operators of AI data centers. The plan pools together thousands of Sunrun's residential solar-plus-battery systems in the PJM and MISO grid regions (covering much of the mid-Atlantic and Midwest) so that tech companies can get power quickly instead of waiting for new grid infrastructure to be built. Neither company said how much capacity the deal covers, or whether individual homeowners with Sunrun systems will see any payment or benefit for participating.
This follows a similar move from Voltus in June 2026, when it signed a three-year deal with Google to supply up to 100 megawatts a year through the same program. Sunrun has also been active elsewhere: in June it partnered with Renew Home and Tesla on a much larger effort to coordinate over 16.8 gigawatts of home battery and solar capacity, and in July it launched a pilot placing small AI computing hardware inside homes with existing solar and battery setups.
These deals reflect a broader trend of solar installers looking for new revenue as home solar sales have dropped sharply. Former Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm noted that pooling home batteries can help data centers avoid costly grid upgrades, but questioned how much of that value will actually flow back to the households whose equipment is being used. For now, homeowners with Sunrun systems in the affected regions may already be part of these arrangements, though details on compensation have not been made public.
