Seriously, Who Is Buying All Those New Subaru EVs?

July 25, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 9

Subaru's electric vehicle sales have had a bumpy few months. The automaker's Solterra EV saw a strong jump in April, but sales dropped sharply in May and again in June. Two newer models, the Trailseeker and Uncharted, picked up some of the slack, and combined electric vehicle sales for Subaru are still running ahead of last year's pace overall. This comes even though the federal $7,500 tax credit for buying an EV was eliminated last year, which had been expected to slow EV sales industry-wide.

Subaru has also delayed its next big electric model, a three-row SUV called the Getaway, which was expected in 2027. The company has not given a new timeline. The delay appears tied to production changes at Toyota, which builds Subaru's electric vehicles in the US and is adjusting plans for its own electric Highlander. That connection could still work in Subaru's favor, since the Highlander has gotten good early reviews, and some of that interest may carry over to the Getaway once it arrives.

For homeowners weighing an EV purchase, the practical takeaway is that model availability and timelines remain in flux, and rebates or incentives can vary depending on the vehicle and your state. If you are considering an EV alongside home upgrades like a heat pump or a home EV charger, it is worth checking current state-level incentives, since the federal tax credit that once applied to EV purchases is gone.
