Not sold on Tesla Powerwall? There are some great home battery alternatives out there

August 17, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 50

If you've been looking at a Tesla Powerwall for backup power and solar storage but want other options, there's now a fairly crowded field to choose from. Anker's SOLIX X1 starts small (5 kWh) and lets you add more storage over time, up to 180 kWh, so you don't have to commit to a big system upfront. BLUETTI's EP800 can charge off the grid during cheap off-peak hours and store that power for when rates go up, which means you can get backup power and savings even without rooftop solar. FranklinWH's aPower S packs the battery and inverter into one unit for simpler installation, storing 15 kWh per unit and stacking for bigger homes.

A few options tie into other parts of your home setup. Enphase offers a full off-grid system pairing its battery with solar microinverters and a backup generator. GM Energy's Home System can share power with a compatible GM electric vehicle, and starts around $11,897 for a 10.6 kWh unit ordered directly from GM. Sigenergy's V2X device lets certain electric vehicles — including Tesla Model 3 and Y, despite Tesla not officially supporting this — send power back into the home.

For those who want the highest-rated option regardless of cost, the Villara VillaGrid+ uses a lithium-titanium-oxide battery chemistry that lasts longer and skips carbon materials for added safety, backed by a 20-year warranty (double the usual 10). It costs roughly twice as much per kWh as a Powerwall, so it's a premium pick rather than a straight swap.
