Nextnova announces plans for 2 GW solar cell manufacturing in Oklahoma

August 27, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 43

Nextnova Solar plans to build a solar cell manufacturing plant in Yukon, Oklahoma, near its Oklahoma City base. The facility, set in a 458,000 square-foot building, would produce 2 gigawatts of solar cells a year, with room to grow to 5 gigawatts if demand supports it. Construction is set to start in November 2026, with production beginning in March 2027. The company says it will start with 300 workers.

This news matters to homeowners mainly as a sign of where solar panel components are being made in the U.S. Right now, the country makes far more finished solar panels than it does the solar cells that go inside them — panel assembly capacity is over 74 gigawatts, while cell-making capacity is only around 10.6 gigawatts, with more planned. That gap has become more important because new tariffs on imported solar cells, put in place under a trade law called Section 232, add a price floor plus a 15% tax on cells brought in from overseas. That can make imported cells cost more than ones made domestically, which is part of why companies like Nextnova are investing in U.S. cell production.

For a homeowner weighing solar panels, this kind of domestic manufacturing growth could eventually affect panel prices and availability, since more U.S.-made cells may reduce reliance on imports. There's no immediate program or rebate tied to this announcement, but it's a piece of the bigger picture on where the parts in a home solar system come from.
