NextEra on track to close Dominion merger by late 2027, executives say

July 27, 2026 · Utility Dive · Score: 42

Energy company NextEra is moving ahead with its plan to buy Dominion Energy, the utility that serves much of Virginia. NextEra's CEO says he expects the deal to close in late 2027. Virginia's utility regulator, the State Corporation Commission, has started its required six-month review and set the first public hearing for this November.

If you get power from Dominion in Virginia, North Carolina, or South Carolina, this merger could affect your electric bill over time. NextEra says the combined company would offer $2.25 billion in bill credits, funded by shareholders rather than added to rates, and argues that a bigger, more efficient company can hold down costs even as demand for power grows. Those are the company's own claims made to investors, not a guarantee, and the deal still needs regulatory approval before anything changes for customers.

The rest of the news is mostly about NextEra's broader business: growth targets, new solar, wind and battery storage projects, and talks about building gas-fired power plants to supply data centers in Texas and Pennsylvania. None of that changes anything at your house right now. For homeowners, the one thing worth tracking is the Virginia review process — the November hearing is the next public step where the merger's effect on rates and service will get scrutiny before any final decision.
