KKR to buy EDF power solutions’ North American operations for $4.2B

July 9, 2026 · Utility Dive · Score: 31

The investment firm KKR is buying the North American operations of EDF power solutions, the clean energy arm of French utility EDF, for $4.2 billion, with up to $390 million more possible depending on how the deal plays out. EDF power solutions owns and operates a large portfolio of solar, wind and battery storage projects across the U.S. and Canada, serving utilities, companies and other large customers. It has developed 26 gigawatts of wind, solar and battery storage projects in North America and has 17 gigawatts under service contracts, ranking among the top 10 renewable energy owners in the country.

KKR says the deal is meant to help expand this clean energy portfolio and speed up new projects at a time when electricity demand is climbing, driven by data centers, factories moving back to the U.S., and more electric equipment overall. The company is funding the purchase through its infrastructure investment arm.

This is a corporate ownership change in the renewable energy industry, not a program or rebate homeowners can apply for. It does not affect home energy upgrades, tax credits, or utility rebates directly. But it is a sign that large investors see rising demand for electricity and are betting on more solar, wind and battery storage capacity being built in North America, which can shape how much power is available and how it is priced in the years ahead.
