JLR’s new Freelander 8 takes off with 10,000 orders in first 48 hours
This is a car news story with no real connection to home energy upgrades, so there's not much here for homeowners planning retrofits. Jaguar Land Rover's new joint venture with Chinese automaker Chery has launched a vehicle called the Freelander 8, and it picked up more than 10,000 orders in its first 48 hours in China. The SUV starts at 339,900 yuan, or roughly $50,000, and comes loaded with luxury touches like reclining massage seats, a refrigerator, and a large touchscreen.
Under the hood, it runs on a plug-in hybrid setup: a 1.5-liter gas engine works as a range extender alongside a 60.3 kWh battery and two electric motors, together producing about 815 horsepower. It's quick, with a 0-60 mph time under 4.5 seconds, and it comes standard with driver-assist technology using radar, lidar, and cameras.
For now this is a China-market vehicle, and the article notes that pre-order numbers in China are often based on refundable deposits, so it's unclear how many of those orders will turn into actual sales. There's no confirmation yet of when or whether the Freelander 8 will come to North America. If you're tracking electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles as part of a broader home energy plan, such as pairing an EV with solar panels or a home charger, this is one to watch, but it has no bearing on home efficiency programs, rebates, or upgrades available to you today.
