Iberdrola kicks off its first large-scale battery project in the US

July 2, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 23

Iberdrola, the Spanish energy giant, is building its first large-scale battery storage project in the US, in Gilliam County, Oregon. The Shutler project is expected to come online in 2027 with a capacity of 41 megawatts and the ability to store up to 82 megawatt-hours of electricity. That makes it a "two-hour battery," meaning it can put out its full power for about two hours before needing to recharge, a common setup for these grid-scale systems.

Batteries like this one don't power individual homes directly. Instead, they store extra electricity generated from renewable sources, like solar and wind, and release it when demand is higher, such as evenings when solar output drops. This helps balance supply and demand across the grid and can make outages less likely. Iberdrola's US subsidiary, Avangrid, already operates about 3,000 megawatts of generation capacity in the Pacific Northwest, and this project adds to that regional footprint.

For homeowners, this isn't something that changes your utility bill or your household setup right away. But it's part of a broader trend: utilities across the country are adding battery storage at a rapid pace because it lets them make better use of renewable power and keep the grid more stable. If you live in the Pacific Northwest, projects like this one may eventually mean a more reliable supply of electricity, particularly during periods of high demand or when renewable generation dips.
