Hyundai’s electric hatch starts at under $30,000, and interest is already sky-high

July 13, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 5

This news is about a car, not a home upgrade, but here's the gist for anyone weighing an EV alongside efficiency plans. Hyundai has unveiled UK pricing for its new IONIQ 3 electric hatchback, starting under £25,000 (about $33,500), with a base trim already listed at £22,245 ($29,800). The company says it has seen record customer interest for the model, more than any Hyundai has had before, gas or electric.

The IONIQ 3 comes in two battery sizes: a 42.2 kWh pack good for up to 213 miles of range, and a 61 kWh pack rated up to 308 miles. Both can fast-charge from 10% to 80% in around 29 to 30 minutes. It's a compact car, smaller than the Chevy Bolt or Kia EV3, but Hyundai says its cargo space leads its class. It also debuts new software, including an Android-based infotainment system and an AI assistant called Gleo AI.

The catch for US homeowners: this car is not expected to come to America. It's built and sold for Europe and the UK, and import tariffs plus weak US demand for hatchbacks make it an unlikely fit here. If you're shopping for an EV in the US, Hyundai's comparable option remains the IONIQ 5, which starts at $35,000 and is built domestically in Georgia. That's worth knowing if an EV purchase is part of your broader home energy plans, since some utilities and rebate programs tie incentives to home charging setups.
