HVACR Distributors See Biggest Sales Gain of Year

September 2, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 50

A trade group that tracks equipment distributors reports that sales of heating, cooling, and refrigeration equipment jumped 6.7% in July compared to a year earlier, the biggest monthly gain of the year. Over the full 12 months through July, sales were up 2.7%. The group's analyst said the July jump mostly reflects weather, not a real shift in demand: regions with hotter summers saw the biggest sales increases, while regions with cooler summers saw declines.

The report also looked at how quickly distributors' customers pay their bills, a measure that stayed steady and about the same as a year ago. The analyst took that as a sign the market isn't getting worse, even though overall demand for heating and cooling equipment has been weak for more than two years. He pointed to a soft housing market, shaky consumer confidence, and persistent inflation as reasons buying has been slow, and said a lasting turnaround would likely need inflation and interest rates to ease.

For a homeowner, this is mostly a snapshot of the broader equipment market rather than news that changes anything about your own house. It doesn't point to price changes, new rebates, or supply issues for furnaces, air conditioners, or heat pumps. It's a sign the industry is watching to see whether demand for home heating and cooling equipment starts to recover.
