Here are the top 10 most affordable EVs and hybrids to insure

August 7, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 23

This isn't really about home energy upgrades, but here's what it covers: Mercury Insurance put out a list of the cheapest new 2026 electric and hybrid vehicles to insure. The Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid ranked first, followed by the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Kia Sportage Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda CR-V Hybrid, Kia Sorento Hybrid, Toyota Sienna Hybrid, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Eight of the ten are hybrids, and only the two Chevys are fully electric.

Insurance costs for these vehicles depend on the same things that affect any car: repair costs, price of replacement parts, safety features, and how often claims get filed. According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, electric cars generally cost about $49 more a month to insure than SUVs. But separate data from the Highway Loss Data Institute shows EVs actually have fewer claims than comparable gas cars, and the gap in payout costs between EVs and gas vehicles after a total loss keeps shrinking.

If you're weighing an EV or hybrid purchase alongside home upgrades like a heat pump or added insulation, insurance is one more monthly cost worth checking before you buy, on top of purchase price, charging setup, and any fuel savings. This particular list only reflects one insurer's internal data, so actual quotes will vary based on your own driving record, location, and other factors.
