Genesis unveils the GV80 HEV, its first hybrid with an ‘EV-like’ drive and better efficiency

August 13, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This is car news, not home energy news, but here's what it covers: Genesis has unveiled its first hybrid vehicle, the GV80 HEV, set to go on sale next month. The automaker says the new 2.5 Turbo Hybrid System offers about a 25% improvement in fuel efficiency over the gas-only version, along with more power (347 horsepower combined) and quicker acceleration.

The system pairs a starter-generator motor with a separate drive motor, and includes a liquid-cooled battery meant to improve efficiency. Genesis built in an "EV Mode" that keeps the car running on electric power alone up to about 19 mph, aimed at quieter driving in parking garages, city streets, and stop-and-go traffic. Above that speed, the gasoline engine takes over.

Genesis also showed the GV80 Hybrid's updated exterior and interior, including a new grille design, new wheels, and several new color and trim combinations.

This is a standard (non-plug-in) hybrid, meaning it doesn't plug in and won't run on electricity alone for any real distance — it's a gas vehicle that uses batteries and electric motors to cut fuel use. For homeowners tracking electrification, this doesn't connect to home charging, rebates, or utility programs the way a plug-in hybrid or full EV would.
