Forbidden fruit: Buick Electra gets 435 mile range and 376 hp for $25,000
GM's Buick brand has unveiled a new electric sedan, the Electra L7, for the Chinese market, and it is drawing attention for its price and range. The car uses a battery supplied by CATL, offering roughly 436 miles of range on the Chinese testing cycle, paired with a 376-horsepower electric motor. Pricing starts around $25,170 in US dollars, which is notably low for a car with this range and power.
The Electra L7 comes with features like a heated steering wheel, wood-grain trim, ambient lighting, a three-zone climate system, a premium sound system, and wireless phone charging. Higher trims include a driver-assist system that combines lidar, radar, and cameras for a fuller view of the road, similar to advanced systems used by other automakers.
There is no indication this car will be sold in the United States as is. It is possible versions could eventually reach Canada or Mexico, since GM's joint venture with China's SAIC has signaled interest in selling these Buick-badged EVs in other markets. For now, this is a look at what battery and pricing technology are producing overseas rather than something tied to any current US buying decision or incentive program. Homeowners weighing an EV purchase in the US should stick to checking what electric vehicles and rebates are actually available in their state today.
