First Fully Electric VW ID. ERA Vehicle — ID. ERA 5X SUV
Volkswagen's joint venture in China, SAIC Volkswagen, has filed paperwork with Chinese regulators for its first fully electric ID. ERA model, an SUV called the ID. ERA 5X. The filing came through China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which released a list of new vehicles cleared for sale in the country. These filings surface ahead of a car's official launch, though they don't include pricing.
The ID. ERA 5X has a peak power output of 155 kW and runs on LFP batteries (lithium iron phosphate, a lower-cost, long-lasting battery chemistry) made by CATL. It's a mid-size SUV, roughly 4.56 meters long. Notably, it's the first vehicle built on a new shared electrical architecture and vehicle platform that Volkswagen developed jointly with Chinese EV maker XPeng, which could shape future VW electric models beyond China.
This SUV isn't alone for long: SAIC Volkswagen also announced a second ID. ERA model, a sedan, with pre-sales starting August 11 and a full launch expected later this year. Currently, the only ID. ERA on the market is the ID. ERA 9X, but that one is an extended-range electric vehicle, meaning it pairs a battery with a small gas engine rather than running purely on electricity.
For now, this is a China-market development with no confirmed plans, pricing, or timeline for U.S. availability. It's worth watching if you're curious about upcoming electric SUV options, but nothing here affects vehicle choices available to American buyers yet.
