Essential system testing every solar project needs for long-term performance

August 19, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 24

Solar panel systems are designed to last for decades, but hidden problems can quietly cut into how much power they produce, sometimes for years before anyone notices. A recent industry piece lays out the range of tests used to catch these issues early, from large solar farms down to the kind of inspection work that applies to home systems too. These include thermal imaging (cameras that spot hot spots from failing parts or shaded panels), electrical checks like insulation resistance and grounding tests (which catch wiring problems before they become safety hazards), and IV curve tracing, which measures how well panels are actually performing against what they're supposed to produce.

The main point is that the app or monitor showing your solar production can tell you something is wrong, but it usually can't tell you why. A drop in output could mean a failed panel, a loose connection, shading, dirt buildup, or a wiring fault, and figuring out which one requires actual testing, not just watching the numbers on a screen. The article recommends this kind of testing happen when a system is first installed, then again on a regular basis, roughly once a year, with some checks done twice a year for best results.

For a homeowner with rooftop solar, the takeaway is that production monitoring alone doesn't guarantee your system stays healthy over its lifespan. Panels and wiring degrade from heat, moisture, and age even when everything looks fine from the outside, and problems can build quietly until they show up as a bigger repair bill or a safety issue.
