Energy storage cell shipment data for H1 2026 reveal three structural shifts

August 17, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 61

The global market for battery storage cells — the batteries used in home and utility-scale energy storage systems — is growing fast and shifting in ways that could eventually affect prices and options for home battery buyers. Shipments worldwide hit 467.84 GWh in the first half of 2026, nearly double last year's pace, with demand outside China now making up more than half of all shipments. Battery cell formats are also changing quickly: for home storage systems specifically, manufacturers are moving away from older, smaller cells toward larger "314 Ah" cells, and some are already testing an even bigger "392 Ah" format that may show up in residential products later this year.

For U.S. homeowners, one detail stands out. Tariffs on Chinese-made battery storage products have climbed sharply, with combined duties now running around 40.9%, making Chinese-built systems more expensive to import. South Korean manufacturer LG Energy Solution is stepping in to fill the gap, ramping up production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells at a Michigan factory, with plans to nearly double capacity there this year. That could mean more U.S.-made or Korean-made storage options becoming available as Chinese supply gets squeezed by trade policy.

None of this changes rebates or incentives for home batteries directly, but it points to a market in flux — more competition among battery makers, rapid changes in cell technology, and shifting supply chains driven by tariffs. Anyone shopping for a home battery system in the next year or two may see more brand and format choices than before, along with price movement tied to these bigger industry shifts.
