Donald Trump Pays Off 5th Energy Company in Attack on Renewable Energy

August 6, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 28

The Trump administration has agreed to pay energy company RWE $1.22 billion to cancel three offshore wind projects and shift its investment toward liquefied natural gas (LNG) instead. This is the fifth time the administration has paid an energy company to drop offshore wind plans. The deals came about after courts struck down the administration's earlier attempts to simply halt these wind projects with stop-work orders, so the government has instead been negotiating payouts to get companies to walk away voluntarily.

These earlier deals are now being challenged in court by state attorneys general from both coasts, who argue the payoffs are improper. Critics, including the Sierra Club, say the arrangement uses taxpayer money to shut down a source of power that has proven reliable during extreme weather, including a recent winter storm and summer heat waves, and argue that killing offshore wind projects removes jobs and a source of electricity for hundreds of thousands of homes.

For homeowners, this doesn't change any rebate, tax credit, or program you can apply for directly. It's a sign of the broader push and pull over renewable energy at the federal level, which can affect how much offshore wind power is available on the grid in the future and how utility costs trend over time. Nothing here changes what's available to individual homeowners planning upgrades right now, but it's worth keeping an eye on how these fights over energy policy play out, since they can shape electricity prices and clean energy options down the road.
