ComEd Commissions Two New Substations, Unlocking Up To 550MW of Wind Energy to the Grid

July 10, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 21

ComEd, the utility serving the Chicago area, has switched on two new transmission substations in LaSalle and Woodford counties in Illinois. The substations connect to the grid at 345 kilovolts and open up capacity for up to 550 megawatts of new wind power, enough to supply about 264,000 homes for a year. Two wind farms, Osagrove Flats and Panther Grove, are set to start operating in late 2026 and early 2027.

For homeowners in ComEd's service area, this is mainly about the electric grid behind the scenes rather than anything you need to do at home. More wind power feeding into the regional grid, run by PJM, is meant to ease the supply-demand crunch that has been pushing up capacity costs and, in turn, electricity bills. ComEd frames the new infrastructure as a step toward more reliable service and, over time, more affordable power.

The company also says it has connected more than 1.7 gigawatts of smaller-scale renewable systems, like rooftop solar, across Illinois, using software and hardware called DERMS (Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems) to manage the grid more efficiently and make room for more of these connections. If you already have solar panels or are thinking about adding them, this kind of grid upgrade can make it easier for utilities to accept that power. There is no new rebate or program here for homeowners to act on, just added grid capacity meant to support cleaner power and steadier service in the region.
