ChargePoint is bringing ultra-fast EV chargers to 12 busy highway travel plazas
ChargePoint and travel plaza chain Onvo are planning to add ultra-fast EV chargers at 12 highway locations across Pennsylvania and New York. The first phase will bring ChargePoint's Express Plus DC fast chargers, a system that can deliver up to 500 kW of power depending on how a site is set up, and can charge several vehicles at once from a shared power system. The chargers work with both CCS1 and NACS connectors, the two main plug types used by EVs in the US, so most electric cars should be able to use them.
Onvo runs 42 travel plazas with food and shopping in central and northeastern Pennsylvania and upstate New York, mostly along highways 80, 81, and 78 in Pennsylvania and route 90 in New York. The companies say the goal is to fill gaps in fast charging along these highway corridors, making longer road trips easier for EV drivers passing through the region.
No construction timeline or opening dates have been announced yet, so there's no word yet on when these chargers will actually be usable. For homeowners in the area who drive an EV, this mainly matters for road trips rather than charging at home, but it's a sign that fast charging is expanding along routes many people already use to get in and out of the region. If you live near one of these highway corridors, it could eventually mean one less thing to plan around before a longer drive.
