ChargePoint adds 200+ new EV charging ports in the Southeast

July 7, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 32

ChargePoint is expanding public EV charging across the southeastern US, teaming up with charge point operator Optimus Energy Solutions to add more than 200 new charging ports. ChargePoint supplies the charging hardware and software, while Optimus will own and run the sites. Many of the new chargers are going in at quick-service restaurants and retail centers, in locations expected to see high demand.

The move addresses a real gap: public charging in the Southeast has lagged behind other parts of the country as EV ownership grows there. It also comes amid a broader supply problem. ChargePoint reported that 190,000 new charging ports came online across its network in 2025, but the number of drivers using chargers grew even faster, outpacing new port installations by nearly 20 percent. That means more cars are competing for each available charger, and ChargePoint has said installation needs to speed up to avoid worsening bottlenecks.

For homeowners in the region who drive or are considering an EV, this points to more charging options showing up at everyday stops like fast-food restaurants and shopping centers, rather than at highway rest stops alone. It does not change anything about home charging equipment or rebates, but it does reflect a broader push to catch up on public charging access in a part of the country that has had fewer options than elsewhere in the US.
