Carrier launches rooftop heat pump for commercial buildings
Carrier has launched a new rooftop heat pump, the WeatherFlex 50FC, but this one is built for commercial and industrial buildings, not houses. It uses a refrigerant called R-454C, which has a lower global warming potential than older refrigerants, and the design was driven mainly by upcoming European Union rules that limit the climate impact of refrigerants in commercial equipment starting in 2027.
The units cover a capacity range of 20 kW to 50 kW and can handle both heating and cooling, working in outdoor temperatures from -18°C to 50°C. They're meant for use in new commercial construction as well as retrofits of existing buildings, with features like multi-zone controls, energy metering, and remote monitoring through Carrier's building-management software. Carrier also sells a similar rooftop unit today using a different refrigerant, R-454B, with somewhat larger capacity options.
For homeowners, this isn't a product you'd install at home. It's aimed at businesses, offices, and industrial sites, and the equipment sizes are far beyond what a typical house would need. The news mainly signals a broader shift in the heat pump industry toward refrigerants with lower climate impact, driven by tightening regulations in Europe. Residential heat pump options and refrigerant rules in the US follow their own separate timelines, so this launch doesn't change what's available or required for home upgrades right now.
