BYD’s flagship electric sedan receives 65,000 locked-in orders

July 6, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 1

This is a car story, not a home energy upgrade story, so it has little direct bearing on weatherization, heat pumps, or home rebate programs. Still, here's what happened: BYD, the Chinese automaker known for cheap electric vehicles, launched a new flagship electric sedan called the Seal 08 in China. In the first 30 hours after it went on sale, buyers placed about 65,000 locked-in orders, on top of 40,000 earlier reservations made since mid-June.

The Seal 08 starts at about $29,000 in China and comes in six versions, split between fully electric and plug-in hybrid. The electric version can travel up to 562 miles on a charge (using China's CLTC test), and BYD's fast-charging system can add about 248 miles of range in just 5 minutes. Most buyers chose the all-wheel-drive electric model. The car is roughly the size of a Tesla Model S and includes features like a large touchscreen, an augmented-reality display, and driver-assist technology.

For a homeowner, this is mainly a sign of how fast China's EV market is moving, with fast charging and long range becoming standard even in mid-priced cars. It doesn't affect home electricity rebates, EV charger incentives, or weatherization programs, since the Seal 08 isn't sold in the U.S. If you're curious about home EV charging setups, that depends on what's available where you live, not on this particular car.
