BYD Just Sells Cheap EVs? Check Out This $216,000 Yangwang
This is car news, not home energy news, but here's what it covers. BYD, a Chinese automaker and the world's top seller of electric vehicles (EVs), just showed off how wide its lineup really is. At the high end, its luxury brand Yangwang launched a four-seat U8L Dingcang Edition priced at about $216,000. It's a plug-in hybrid rather than a pure EV, with 143 miles of electric-only range, and it can fast-charge from 10% to 70% battery in about 5 minutes.
At the other extreme, BYD's Racco is a tiny electric "kei car" built for Japan's market, priced around $13,585 before any subsidies. It picked up 700 orders in its first week, with BYD hoping for 10,000 by the end of 2026. In between, the Denza Z9S sedan starts around $47,378, offers up to 684 miles of range per charge, and can go from 10% to 70% charge in 5 minutes. It also comes with a lidar-based driver-assist system and voice-controlled features. BYD's boxy Fang Cheng Bao SUV, averaging around $32,850, just hit 500,000 units sold.
None of this changes what's available to U.S. homeowners right now — these models are sold in China and Japan, not here. But it's a reminder of how fast EV technology and pricing are moving globally, including fast-charging speeds that keep shrinking and price points that span from budget to ultra-luxury.
