Chinese automaker BYD sold 456,713 passenger vehicles in September, up 5.4% from August and 16.2% from a year earlier. The bigger story is in fully electric vehicles (BEVs, cars that run only on battery power with no gas engine): those sales jumped 33.2% from September last year, reaching 273,143. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales, which pair a gas engine with a battery, grew more slowly month to month and actually fell 2.4% compared with a year ago, dropping to 183,570.
Looking at the first nine months of 2026 as a whole, BYD's total passenger vehicle sales are down 4.4% from the same period in 2025, but that decline is entirely on the plug-in hybrid side, which is down 10.2% for the year. Fully electric sales, by contrast, are up 1.5% over the same nine months, meaning BYD has already pulled its full-electric lineup back into growth even though its overall sales haven't fully recovered.
This is industry sales data rather than news about rebates or programs, so it doesn't change anything about home energy upgrades or incentives. For homeowners weighing an electric vehicle alongside things like a heat pump or home charging setup, it's simply a sign that demand for fully electric cars, as opposed to hybrids, keeps climbing at one of the world's largest EV makers.
