It's a sponsored piece from Daikin about a technology called VRV/F (variable refrigerant volume/flow), used in offices, hotels, schools, and mixed-use buildings. Instead of one big system pushing air through ductwork, VRV/F uses compact refrigerant piping and many small indoor units that each act as their own "smart node," adjusting on the fly based on sensor readings rather than just a wall thermostat. The pitch is that different rooms in a building often need very different amounts of heating or cooling at the same time, and this approach lets each space respond to its own conditions.
The efficiency argument is similar to what's often made for home heat pumps: rather than cycling on and off at full blast, these systems use variable-speed technology to run at whatever output level is actually needed, which uses less energy and puts less wear on equipment. Some versions can also move heat pulled from one part of a building to warm another part, instead of wasting it.
For homeowners, the direct takeaway is limited, since this is aimed at commercial and multifamily buildings, renovations, and hotels. But the underlying technology, refrigerant-based systems with multiple independently controlled zones instead of ductwork, is the same family as residential ductless heat pumps (sometimes called mini-splits), which are already a common option for home energy upgrades.
