Brookfield to buy energy storage developer Aypa for $7 billion

July 23, 2026 · Solar Power World · Score: 24

Brookfield Asset Management is buying solar and battery storage developer Aypa Power from Blackstone in a deal worth about $7 billion, valuing the company at $3 billion. Aypa builds large-scale battery storage systems (BESS) — big installations that store electricity, often paired with solar or wind, to help the grid handle demand more reliably. The company has 12 projects totaling 2.1 gigawatts underway across eight states, including Texas, California, and Louisiana, and describes itself as one of the largest standalone battery platforms in North America, with 6.5 gigawatts of projects operating, under construction, or contracted, plus another 20 gigawatts planned for the future.

For homeowners, this deal itself doesn't change anything about your house directly — it's a corporate ownership change in the utility-scale power business, not a residential program. But it's a sign of how much money is flowing into large battery storage, which utilities increasingly rely on to keep the grid stable as more solar and wind come online. More grid-scale storage in your region can mean fewer strains during peak demand and potentially more support for programs that reward homes with solar panels or batteries for feeding power back to the grid.

Brookfield already owns stakes in other big renewable energy companies, including Deriva Energy (formerly Duke Energy Renewables), Scout Clean Energy, and Standard Solar. This purchase adds another major storage developer to its portfolio as it expands further into the battery storage business.
