Bexar BESS achieves NERC registration in ERCOT
A large battery storage project in Bexar County, Texas, has officially started commercial operation and completed a regulatory registration required for grid facilities of its size. The Bexar Battery Energy Storage System, built by Goshe Energy Storage, stores 134 megawatt-hours of power at a capacity of 100 megawatts. Because it crosses a size threshold set by NERC (the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, which oversees grid reliability), it had to register as a "Generation Owner" and meet cybersecurity and technical standards before going live. Radian Generation worked with Goshe to verify the system's controls and confirm it met those requirements.
For homeowners, this isn't a program or rebate you can apply for. It's a large-scale grid battery, the kind utilities use to store power and release it when demand is high, not a home battery system. But projects like this matter for anyone in Texas's ERCOT grid region, since more grid-scale storage generally means more backup capacity to handle demand spikes and support the reliability of your local power supply.
If you're considering your own home battery, this news is a reminder that battery storage is expanding at every scale, from whole-home backup systems to massive grid installations like this one. It doesn't change what's available to you as a homeowner, but it reflects a broader build-out of battery capacity that could support the grid supplying your house.
